“Painting the figure, on the beach, is the most difficult thing Ive ever done and I guess
thats why I keep doing it. When I'm successful, it's a harmony of color that delights me,
and hopefully the viewer. When it's not, no one seems to notice the work. I can teach
my students all the ins and outs of light and shade and reflected light, but not that
elusive magic that makes a painting magic. Thats a poetry that comes when
everything comes together, light, model, craft and that other thing.”
